Worship Service celebrates ELCA UMC Full Communion Agreement
3:00p.m.
A. F. Siebert Chapel

Carthage College will hold a special festive worship service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, to celebrate the full communion agreement between the United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The worship service will be held in A.F. Siebert Chapel.

The Rev. Hope Luckie, university chaplain at Illinois Wesleyan University, will preach. The Rev. Dr. David Olson, interim bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the ELCA, will preside. This worship service will feature the Carthage Wind Orchestra, the Carthage Handbell Choir, and several other choirs from the campus and the community.

All people of faith and goodwill are encouraged to attend. The colors of the day are red and gold. Pastors and other rostered leaders are encouraged to wear vestments and process. For further information, you may contact the host pastor for this event, the Rev. Harvard Stephens Jr., dean of Siebert Chapel, at (262) 551-5812 or by e-mail, hstephens@carthage.edu.

Full communion is not a merger, but it means that the two churches have expressed a common confession of Christian faith and will mutually recognize Holy Baptism and share Holy Communion. The ELCA and the UMC can now celebrate their common faith as they worship together and enjoy the freedom to exchange members. They have also agreed to mutual recognition of ordained ministers for service in either church and have expressed a common commitment to evangelism, witness, service, and shared decision making on critical matters. The ELCA has 4.6 million members, and the UMC has 8 million members.
