Carthage has a plan in place to reduce the spread of influenza among members of the campus community. Because health authorities have warned about a potentially more virulent outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, we will ask students to do the following:
1. Stay informed
Estimates of the risks associated with H1N1 seem to change frequently,
and it is likely that the best thinking about this virus will change
from now through the flu season. We will refer students to appropriate
web sites for the most current information (such as the Center for Disease Control)
throughout the year.
2. Stay healthy
We will continue an awareness plan begun more than a year ago to
provide advice about how to minimize the spread of all viruses. Steps
to stay healthy include covering your nose and mouth when coughing or
sneezing; washing hands often with soap and water; avoiding touching
eyes, nose or mouth; and avoiding contact with others who are sick with
a flu-like illness.
3. Take action
Carthage will offer the seasonal flu vaccine on campus in September. (Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 262-551-5715 for the exact date and cost). The vaccine includes the seasonal flue and H1N1 (swine) flu.
It is not common practice to cancel classes or to close the College. Our goal is to keep as many people as healthy as possible, and to plan for ways to stay open. In order to determine the severity of illness on campus, we will ask students who have flu symptoms or are diagnosed with H1N1 to contact their physician or Health Services.
Carthage has a plan in place to respond to a flu outbreak. Administrative and operational leaders meet regularly to review the plan and monitor campus health. We will follow the CDC and the Kenosha Health Department regulations, as appropriate.
