Confidentiality

All information shared with the nurse or psychologist/counselor is confidential.

According to state law, the nurse and psychologist/counselor cannot release information about a student without the student's permission. Thus, the nurse and psychologist/counselor will not share a student's concerns with faculty, staff, other students, or family.

Some exceptions to confidentiality exist; the nurse or counselor can inform a student of these conditions.

In counseling, exceptions to confidentiality may occur if:

  1. the counselor determines a student poses a serious threat of harm to self or another person.
  2. a student discusses current abuse of a child or a vulnerable adult (e.g., elderly or disabled person)
  3. a court subpoenas a student's records.
