Career Services
Carthage Career Services assists you in developing a four year
plan that will increase your likelihood of finding a rewarding
career.
1. Understanding Yourself
This plan begins with self - assessment. Knowing your interests,
skills and values is a vital first step in determining your
career goals. Career Services offers individual counseling
sessions and assessment instruments to help you learn more about
yourself.
Check out our Assessment Tools
page for details.
We encourage you to meet with a career counselor. Call (262)
551-5959 to schedule an appointment.
2. Discover The World Of Work
The next step on your career path is to discover the world of
work. Find out about the particular occupations in which your
interest, skills and values lie. This can be done through:
- Literature Reviews.
Research and read. Both the Career Services Resource Library
and the Hedberg Library have many publications which will
enhance your knowledge about a variety of occupations.
- Informational Interviews.
Establish contact with individuals who are currently employed
in the type of career you are considering. They can provide
realistic and up- to-date information about that occupation.
Career Services might be able to help you network with Alumni
in your chosen career.
- Job Shadowing.
Another way to gain first hand experience is through job
shadowing. Ask permission to follow someone in their job. This
allows you to observe their daily work routine.
3. Just Try It!
Once you've focused in on a career, try it on for size.
Internships, part-time employment, and volunteer experiences are
all great ways to test out a career, gain valuable experience and
help develop professional contacts.
Notices about a variety of opportunities may be found on-line in
our on-line job/internship posting system called Carthage Career
Connection.
Career Services also post internship opportunties in the resource
library and on the bulletin board outside the office. Additional
notices may be posted by faculty either in class or near their
offices.
4. Develop Job Search Skills
You have assessed your skills, read the literature and
participated in an internship. Next, develop your job search
skills. Plan to visit Career Services early and often during your
senior year. We provide a host of resources for graduating
seniors and alumni. Here are a few important tips to remember:
- Finalize your resume.
Don't under estimate the time it takes to develop a
professional looking resume. Both the content and the format of
your resume will create lasting impressions. Have your resume
critiqued by Career Services staff.
- Attend a workshop.
Polish those skills by attending some of the many workshops
offered by Career Services. Check out our calendar for details.
