Geography is the science that describes the earth's surface with particular reference to the differentiation and relationships of areas.  At Carthage, Geography is a modern applied science that retains its ancient, traditional role as a liberal art. Many societal problems have geographic dimensions and an education in geography provides essential skills for real-world problem solving.

OUTLOOK FOR FIELD
Employment of regional and urban planners is expected to grow more slowly than average through 2006.  Demand for surveyors and mapping scientists is expected to decline slightly through 2006, as the widespread availability and use of advanced technologies, such as GIS, increases.  Employment may fluctuate along with construction activity.

SALARY
The national average starting salary for geography majors was $23,399 in 2001.  New graduates of master's program in geological and related sciences earned an average of $42,875 in 2001.  Geographers with a few years experience earn $38,109 on the average and urban planners with some experience make $33,993 on the average.
