Description of Major
The study of history provides the necessary background for a sound
understanding of the modern world. Because history is an
interdisciplinary enterprise, the history faculty at Carthage must draw
upon both the liberal arts and social sciences to present an accurate
and complete view of the human experience.

Current Outlook
Carthage is home to a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary society. The society welcomes
students to its membership who have taken at least twelve credits in
history and have achieved at least a 3.1 GPA in the history department.
History majors are often interested in the Model UN of Carthage, a student-run organization that seeks to introduce
students to the inner-workings of the United Nations and global issues
by allowing students to participate in simulations of the Security
Council, General Assembly, and Economic and Social Council. If you are
interested in Politics, Economics, History, Philosophy, Geography, the
Natural Sciences, the art of persuasion, or just learning more about
other cultures, the Model UN is for you. As a participant in the Model
UN, you will travel to conferences and engage in negotiations and
debates about global issues that are being discussed by the world's
leaders today. If you are interested in issues such as human rights,
environmental politics, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, and poverty,
among others, then the Model UN of Carthage is for you. All majors are
welcome.

and understand how humans on all levels of society have lived and
grappled with war, revolution, social change, and the environment.
History also provides students with the tools for a lifetime of

oral communication, adn good writing are the skills that are developed
through the study of history. These skills provide the foundation for
successful careers in law, business, journalism, teaching, government,
and the ministry.
