Description of Major
Neuroscience is a comparatively recent interdisciplinary field that reflects connections between the natural sciences and the behavioral sciences, especially biology and psychology. The aim of most neuroscience research endeavors is to develop an integrated understanding of how the physical, electrical, chemical, and genetic properties of the central nervous system interact with the behaviors expressed by a particular organism.

Current Outlook
Psi Chi is the national honor society for psychology. Membership is
open to psychology majors/minors. Eligibility is based on an overall
GPA of 3.00 or higher, being in the top 1/3 of the psychology GPA, and
the completion of three psychology classes. Members travel to local and
national conferences presenting papers and projects, as well as
participation in a national service project.
Beta Beta Beta is the honorary society for students who have displayed superior
academic achievement in biology. At Carthage, the society aims to cultivate a keen
interest in the natural sciences, to stimulate an appreciation for
biological research, and to promote scholarship.
Why take Neuroscience at Carthage?
The neuroscience major at Carthage
reflects the interdisciplinary focus of the field. Required courses in
the areas of biology, psychology, and chemistry provide a solid
foundation for understanding the methods and principles of the natural
and social sciences. The major also provides an opportunity for
students to choose elective courses in the above areas.
The Carthage neuroscience major provides both a breadth of
understanding in basic scientific principles and depth of understanding
in the emerging area of nervous system research, preparing students for
graduate school and career opportunities in a diverse range of
scientific research and medical/therapeutic fields.
Majors gain practical hands-on research by working in the laboratory
of a faculty member in neuroscience for at least two terms to
experience the process of obtaining, analyzing, and interpreting
neuroscience data.
