Description of Major
The major in sociology, the science of society, examines social patterns and change wherever found - small groups; a range of political, economic, and cultural organizations; whole societies; and world systems. It reveals the social forces constraining our lives and discloses the critical play of economic, racial, and gender inequalities. Sociology probes the links between historical eras and personal biographies, between social structures and private lives.

Current Outlook
Alpha Kappa Delta is
Carthage's honorary sociology society. Students need a 3.5 overall GPA
to be inducted, and are eligible during their junior year.
The Pals and Partners program is very popular with Carthage sociology majors. The program pairs Carthage students with community
children who are identified as "at risk" because of home life or
experiences in school. Carthage students provide a positive role-model
for the children, help them understand the importance of school, and
encourage them to get involved in positive activities outside the
classroom. Participants must commit a minimum of 2 hours per week to
the program.
