Environmental Science

Description of Major
Humans will continue to use the earth and its resources for generations to come. An understanding of human impacts and the application of principles of environmental science will be critical for the future of our earth and all of its inhabitants.

Relevant Coursework
Environmental Science and various interrelated courses, including Chemistry, Political Science, Biology, Economics, and Geography; even Computer Science, Social Work or Business Administration. The courses depending on the track you choose.

Within each discipline you will learn the important topics, for instance biodiversity, ecology, and conservation genetics in Biology; Geographic Information Systems, mapping, soils, and hydrology in Geography. Again, it depends on the track you choose.

Current Outlook
Carthage United to Rescue the Earth (CURE) meets regularly to promote education and activities related to conservation and recycling efforts. The group's purpose is to encourage and enable all members of the Carthage community to respect and preserve our precious natural resources. CURE organizes Earth Day clean-ups, campus educational programs, recycling awareness, ecosystem restoration projects, in addition to camping and outdoor fun.

Why take Environmental Science at Carthage?
Carthage's environmental science major focuses on the study of the problems that arise when human beings interact with the physical/natural environment that surrounds them.  As a major in a liberal arts college, the approach is broadly based and yet focused on the student's choice of an individual study track: Conservation/Ecology; Environmental Policy; Environmental Data Analysis; Water Supply/Quality, or Environmental Education).

Faculty from several departments collaborate to create the major. One of the primary goals of the program is to educate natural and social scientists in the liberal arts tradition where students will understand how to approach complex problems using methodologies and philosophies from multiple disciplines. The program prepares students for both graduate study and careers in environmental fields.
