The Marshall Scholarship was created by the British Parliament in 1953 to honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan. This scholarship, which gives highly qualified Americans a chance to pursue full- time study in the United Kingdom, fosters cross cultural exchange between the two countries. The award, for two years study, may cover either undergraduate or the graduate level programs. Each scholarship is worth approximately $24,000 per year, covering tuition, residence and related costs.

General Selection Criteria and Procedures

The profile of a Marshall scholar is much like that of the Rhodes scholar. Originality of thought, keen intellect, and potential for leadership are highly valued. Candidates are judged heavily on the strength of their study proposal. Individuals should research thoroughly where programs of note in their area of interest are found and reflect on the rationale and content of their proposed course of study. Regional committees review all applications and interview the most promising candidates. The selected fellows are announced from Washington in late November.

Deadline

  • December 19, 2001
