The Mellon Fellowship was established to encourage highly qualified seniors and recent alumni to pursue careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic studies. Fellowships are awarded for the first year of a Ph.D. program. Fellows are expected to carry a full course load. The stipend for 2000 was $15,000 plus tuition and mandated fees.
To request an application, go to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation website or call 1/800.899.9963 (extension 127 or 147).
Regional committees review candidates' college transcripts, GRE scores, faculty recommendations, and personnel statements and invite the most promising individuals for personal interviews. These committees then recommend finalists to the Final Selection Committee, which determines the winners. Successful candidates are individuals with excellent communication skills, records of academic excellence, and strong desires to be a first class teachers and scholars.
