The Rhodes Scholarship was founded in 1903 to fulfill Cecil J. Rhodes dream of bringing together outstanding students from through out the English speaking world to study at the University where he took his degree. He hoped this process would aid in cultural understanding and promote international peace. The Rhodes Scholarship is perhaps the most prestigious honor a senior or recent graduate can receive. Successful candidates display integrity of character, leadership, social concern, and academic excellence. The Scholarship pays full tuition, living expenses and transportation for two years of study at the University of Oxford with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

Eligibility

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Between the ages of 18 and 23
  • Possess a Bachelor's Degree
  • Endorsement of the College President

Application Procedure

  • Meet with the Carthage Faculty Representative for the Rhodes Scholarship
  • A completed application
  • College transcripts
  • Proof of age and citizenship
  • Medical certificate
  • Eight letters of recommendation
  • Professional photograph, with the signature on the back
  • A list of honors and activities in college, not to exceed one page in length
  • A personnel essay describing specific area of proposed study and reasons for wishing to study at Oxford.
  • A letter of endorsement from the College President

General Selection Criteria And Procedures

Application is made to the Secretary of the appropriate State Committee. After review of the material regional finalist are invited for interviews. The selection of Rhodes Scholars is announced in December. Important factors in the selection of a Rhodes Scholar are intellectual distinction, social commitment, moral and community leadership. The emphasis is on a strong academic record and evidence of leadership and initiative outside the classroom.
