The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation was created to honor our thirty-third President's commitment to public service. Scholarships are awarded to students who possess outstanding leadership potential and who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Preference is given to candidates who plan to enroll in graduate programs in public administration, public policy analysis, public health, international relations, government, social service, education human resource development and conservation and environmental protraction.

The award provides financial support of up to $30,000. Scholars are eligible to receive $3,000 for their senior year of undergraduate study and $27,000 for their graduate education.

Eligibility

  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
  • Full-time junior at a four-year institution
  • Upper 25 percent of class
  • Commitment to public service
  • Endorsement of the applicant's educational institution

Application Procedure

  • Meet with the Carthage Faculty Representative for the Truman Scholarship
  • A completed, signed Institution Nomination Form
  • A completed, signed Nomination Form
  • An analysis of a public policy issue
  • A current official transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Faculty Representative

Nomination information must be submitted on the original forms or photocopies of the original by the Faculty Representative. Application materials are available online.

General Selection Criteria And Procedures

A committee reviews all nominations and selects finalists for regional interviews. The Regional Review Panel is composed of senior public servants, former Truman Scholars, and college and university presidents. These evaluators assess a candidate's:

  • Writing and analytical skills
  • Academic performance and potential
  • Leadership abilities and desire to influence public policies
  • Extent and quality of public and community service and government involvement
  • Suitability of the nominee's proposed program of study for a career in public service
