Expressions of faith and spirituality are vital to the Carthage experience. Carthage is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and we encourage ecumenical and interfaith conversations that explore the role of faith in shaping contemporary society and the disciplines of the liberal arts. At Carthage, faith perspectives to life are informed by great ideas, renewed by enduring traditions, challenged by thoughtful questions, and nurtured by a caring community.

The mission of the College is summarized in these words: Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together. Our Lutheran heritage equips us to fulfill this mission. We believe that inspired education and informed faith can work together to prepare us for fuller lives of service, useful work, discernment of our vocations, appreciation of others, and a deeper understanding of the world.

The distinctiveness of this Lutheran tradition in higher education is a precious heritage and magnificent resource. Carthage has stood proudly in this tradition since its founding in 1847, and we continue to provide opportunities for men and
women to serve others in the world and in the church.

Opportunities for Christian worship are provided as part of the Chapel Series. Worship services are offered on campus during the school year on Wednesday mornings and on Sunday evenings, including an 8:45 p.m. Mass coordinated by our Roman Catholic lay minister with area priests.
