Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook:

  • Job growth for chemists will be strongest in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, including genetics.
  • Employment of materials scientists is expected to grow as manufacturers of diverse products seek to improve quality with new materials and processes.
  • Chemical manufacturing industries are expected to employ fewer chemists as companies divest their R&D operations, but R&D service firms will experience healthy growth.
  • Graduates with a master's degree or a Ph.D. will enjoy better opportunities, especially at larger pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, beginning salary offers in July 2007 for graduates with bachelor's degrees in chemistry averaged $41.506 a year. Median annual earnings of chemists in 2006 were $59,870.

Companies employing Carthage graduates include Abbott Laboratories, Accenture, ATO Findley Inc., West De Pere High School, Ellsworth Adhesive Systems, Lauder International, and S.C. Johnson.
