About the Center

Carthage's Center for Children's Literature is located on the 1st floor of the Hedberg Library. With over 20,000 volumes, the Center houses a variety of children's books and tapes. The Center also holds workshops, organizes reading programs and sponsors lectures and seminars by noted authors and illustrators. Its vast collection is available to students, educators and the community. In addition, the Center publishes a newsletter, available to members of the Friends Group, detailing the Center's activities and previewing upcoming programs.

The Center was officially launched in October 1998 to house the extensive collection of over 17,000 volumes accumulated by Dr. John Stewig. Part of this collection was the generous gift from Professor Bette Peltola, a longtime and highly respected member of the UWM faculty. Each year, publishers, both large and small, send Dr. Stewig complimentary copies of their latest children's books for his review. Dr. Stewig donates each book to the Center, which now houses over 20,000 volumes.

Visitors are encouraged to browse through the vast collection. Membership in the Friends Group provides the Center with much-needed funding and gives members the opportunity to check out books and learn about the programs and workshops offered by the Center. The center director's office is located in Lentz Hall 328E.
