The Center hosts a series of lectures and workshops throughout the year. Many are of interest to the general public, including parents concerned about their own children's reading, and adults in the community who wish to get involved in writing or illustrating children's books. Some are specifically targeted to teachers addressing the issue of making children's books more central to the curriculum.

The following speakers shared their insights:


Lori Benton, publisher for Harcourt Children's Books, Michele Wetherbee, art director, Harcourt Children's Books, Susan L. Roth, illustrator, Bloomsbury Books, Sharon Hancock, marketing manager, Candlewick Press, Timothy Travaglini, editor, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Kimberly Willis Holt, author, Henry Holt Books, Jennifer Flannery, agent, Flannery Associates, Liz Moore, independent bookseller, the Bookstall at Chestnut Court, and Midge Green, Barnes & Noble.

Participants were able to raise individual questions in individual sessions in each speech, as we as during informal conversations at lunch. As usual at our events, books by our authors and illustrators were available so participants could have them autographed.


 


Anna Celenza and JoAnn Kitchel came to Carthage
on Saturday April 5th, 2008 to discuss their series of five picture books THE FAREWELL SYMPHONY, PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, THE HEROIC SYMPHONY, BACH'S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS and RHAPSODY IN BLUE. The program will featured a discussion about music and education and the nature of their work.

 


Nonny Hogrogian is an award-winning illustrator of children's books from New York. She was twice winner of the Caldecott medals in 1966 and 1972. Much of her illustrations are for books of Armenian fairy tales. She was the honored guest at a tea sponsored by the Center on Tuesday, April 15th, 2008. It was held in Hedberg Library, where her books and art work were on display and for sale.

 

Orginal Artwork by Caldecott Award Winner, Eric Rohmann

During the month of January in 2007 visitors to the Hedberg Library had the rare opportunity of viewing all of the original art for one of Eric Rohmann's picture books. Rohmann is the winner of a Caldecott Honor Book award for his wordless picture book, TIME FLIES. Subsequently he won the Caldecott award for his book MY FRIEND RABBIT. Rohmann agreed to share materials from every step of the process from the roughest first sketch through finished book.

The reception for Eric Rohmann was held Hedberg Library.

FIRST ANNUAL SUMMER CONFERENCE
In June 2005, teachers, librarians and parents spent two days hearing from eight different authors/illustrators who talked about their work and about using books with children. Following the optional buffet dinner, storyteller Anne Shimojema entertained the audience with multicultural stories.


Attendees browsed a wide variety for new books by several different authors.

Robert Burleigh talked about his books, including a new one on the artist Seurat.
Authors autographed copies of their books throughout the
day.

Gerald Morris talked about his Robin Hood fantasy cycle for older readers.

Attendees had the chance to chat informally with authors
while getting books autographed.
Cedarburg Native, Barbara Josse, talked about herpicture books.


Candy Flemming, author of picture books as well as
longer books for older readers, described her writing processes.


Sally Walker's information picture books on a wide
variety of topics have attracted critical acclaim.

GALLERY OPENING IN HONOR OF FLORENCE PARRY HEIDE
For a month in autumn 2005, visitors to the Johnson Art Gallery on campus were able to view original art work by twelve different artists done for several of Kenosha author, Florence Parry Heide's books. This event was cosponsored by the Center for Children's Literature and the college art department.

LOCAL ARTIST/WRITER SPEAKS AT OPENING DINNER

On November 6, 2005, Carthage College hosted the Grand Opening dinner for the Center for Children's Literature. Guest speaker at the gala event was author/illustrator Lois Ehlert, noted Caldecott Honor award winner.
Ms. Ehlert spoke engagingly about the processes she uses in creating her collage art, answered questions from the audience of over 75 people, and signed copies of her books.
