Students in traditional Chinese clothing perform Chinese folk songs at the annual International Poetry Festival at Carthage.
The knowledge of Chinese culture, society and language opens tremendous opportunities in today's global age. Students who enter the workforce with the ability to use Chinese seem to have an increasing edge in the job market and business world. The Department of Modern Languages offers courses in Chinese, and students can work with their advisors and department faculty to create a major in the language. Carthage offers both a major and a minor in Chinese.
Students who study Chinese at Carthage will discover a program centered on helping students achieve their personal and professional goals. Beginning courses focus on the spoken language and are usually taught by native Chinese speakers. Students are exposed to the cultures of Chinese-speaking countries from the first day of their first Chinese course.
Faculty from various academic departments at Carthage regularly lead J-Term study tours to China. Students of all majors have the opportunity to study the country's incredible history, growing economy and rich culture. Modern language majors are also required to spend at least one full semester abroad.
