Salvete (Welcome)!
We, faculty and students, in Classics welcome you to the Classics web page. At Carthage, one of the ways we learn about the present is through study of the past. This may sound paradoxical, but you cannot know where you are going if you do not know where you were.
Western societies all claim the worlds of Greece and Rome as their ancestors or inspiration in law, governance, literature, art, architecture, science, philosophy, and history, to name a few. As a discipline, Classics is interdisciplinary, for the well educated person needs to have some command of all these fields. What is more, to understand the ancient world, you need to take an interdisciplinary approach, much as you do in life.
Classics forces you to understand how the ancient approached problems that still vex modern society. In studying the classes, you begin to understand your own society. In classics, it is about the journey — the journey of discovery not only of the ancients but ourselves. It is also very rigorous and as a consequence, it shapes your mind to see the world around you in new ways.
We offer a wide range of courses in the ancient languages of Greek and Latin; the histories of Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Ancient Middle East; and archaeology on campus and in the field (Omrit and Rome). Some members of our department also offer J-Term trips to Italy, Greece, Turkey, and soon, Libya.
Make classics your home so we can travel together to a new world that is always fresh and that reveals something new all the time. Let us guide you on your journey to the vibrant world of classics.
