Speakers
The Clausen Center has become increasingly active in sponsoring visitors on our own and also in collaboration with other institutes and programs at Carthage, especially in connection with campus wide speakers. The Business and Professional Coalition of Carthage hosted Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle. Sustained emphasis is being given by the Center to local and state as well as national and foreign government professionals. Other visitors have included Wisconsin State Senator Bob Wirch (Democrat) and Representative Samantha Kerkman (Republican).
Cordelia Taylor, founder and director of The Family House in Milwaukee, visited Carthage as a Clausen Center Distinguished Visitor in April 2006. The Family House is a residential care facility for older people and others in need, located in the midst of a high crime and illegal drug trade area. Her organization is recognized as one of the finest in the U.S.
On March 14 2007 the Center assisted Kenosha County Commissioner Allan Kehl in organizing the second 'Kenosha Economic Summit', which was held on the Carthage campus. Sustained emphasis is being devoted to analysis of regional economic, demographic and related changes. The Racine County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Southeast Wisconsin Workforce Development, are among the organizations involved.
In April 2007, the Center and the Heritage Program cosponsored a visit by Gillian Sorensen, Senior Adviser and National Advocate for the United Nations Foundation. She was formerly Assistant Secretary General of the UN, as well as Chief of Protocol for the City of New York. Her visit reflects the priority being given to UN and related topics by the Center.
We are also emphasizing the educational roles of the media. In this regard, visitors have included Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, and host of 'Beyond the Beltway' on radio and television; and Bill Schneider, senior political analyst for CNN.
