Computer Science

The Computer Science Department at Carthage is a dynamic group of faculty and students who collectively participate in one of the most exciting and active high-tech fields in the modern world. Coursework toward a computer science major or minor is project-based. Graduates hit the job market running, prepared for the ever-evolving nature of this field.

Project-Based Learning
Computer science classes at Carthage share a common philosophy of project-based learning. In most programming courses, students spend much of their semester designing and building software, not listening to lectures. Because classes are small – many have fewer than 10 students – professors can closely guide students through complex projects such as MIDI translation software, GrafiX, and other programming topics.

Abundant Research Opportunities
In addition to the projects computer science students tackle in the classroom, many Carthage CS students are hired as interns at local high technology firms. On-campus opportunities for research exist through the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. Research experiences are ample and tailored to student interests, whether computer graphics, parallel computing, or scientific programming and visualization.

Modern, Interdisciplinary Coursework
At Carthage, computer science students can take classes in artificial intelligence, network programming, computer graphics and other modern fields to supplement a solid foundation in software design and computing logic. The department’s professors are physicists, mathematicians, geographers and psychologists in addition to being computer scientists, giving students a valuable understanding of how computer science can be applied to other fields.

State-of-the-art Facilities
The computer science program is housed in the new $6 million A.W. Clausen Center for World Business, a first-class learning center. Computer science facilities include wireless classrooms, a server room, hardware lab, and a networking/advanced computing facility with Linux and Sun/Solaris platforms. Students have access to Carthage’s Computation and Visualization Laboratory for computational research projects.

Exciting Career Opportunities
The technical and analytical skills you'll cultivate in the computer science program are universally valuable assets. Carthage computer science graduates have gone on to exciting positions in research, software engineering and web programming. Students wishing to pursue graduate training in computer science have been successful in top graduate programs around the country.
