Computer Science

A Word from the Department

Welcome!

The Computer Science Department at Carthage is a dynamic group of faculty and students. We offer a modern and interdisciplinary array of courses and individual research experiences tailored to the interests of our students. If your goal is to create cutting-edge software that will change the world, Carthage’s Computer Science Department will help get you there.

Computer science is a field that requires a mix of analytical skills, complex reasoning, technical know-how and creativity. Our goal is to provide our students with the know-how, and then give them plenty of opportunities to analyze difficult problems and express their creativity with rock-solid implementations to those problems. We can accomplish this goal because we offer small classes from a knowledgeable faculty. Our students get to know us, and we get to know our students.

The Computer Science Department’s faculty is a diverse group with many interests and varying backgrounds in the sciences. We offer classes in the latest technologies and provide opportunities for undergraduate research. In most J-Terms, a computer science topics course is offered that explores a cutting-edge area of computer science. The intense J-Term provides a unique opportunity to study a hot new topic in depth.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects that computer science-related jobs will be among the fastest growing in the United States over the next 10 years. They report that job prospects are excellent for people with at least a bachelor's degree in computer science. Many Carthage students spend their summers working in internships in the Chicago or Milwaukee area before entering the work force.

My colleagues and I look forward to working with bright and energetic students in one of the most interesting fields of study at Carthage. Earning a degree in computer science is a challenging task. However, it is one that can be very rewarding. Our goal as a department is to make problem solvers who are capable of handling the complex issues of today and tomorrow. Students will carry the skills that they learn at Carthage in the ever-changing field of computer science throughout their careers.
