Last year, Amanda Muscarello was awarded two of the most prestigious student grants at Carthage: The Diskerud-Eller Scholarship and Albert and Marion Pufahl Scholarship. A criminal justice major, she has been interested in law enforcement since she was young.
"Since I was little, I've always enjoyed watching crime-related television shows," she says. "Even though these programs severely obscure the truth behind the way the criminal justice system really works, it piqued my curiosity enough for me to choose criminal justice as my major."
Her goal is to work with troubled juveniles, and she says her Carthage classes have been both enlightening and fun. "The professors who teach the criminal justice classes are very interested in the subject," she explains. "They really give students the chance to get to know each other on a personal level. They really care about their students."
Favorite professor: "Rick Matthews is probably one of my favorite professors. His classes are very interesting and instead of dreading going to class, Professor Matthews actually made people anticipate coming to class."
Favorite class: "Juvenile Delinquency. While sitting in class, I decided that helping the juveniles who are placed into a corrupt system is something that I would seriously enjoy doing the rest of my life."
Toughest class: "My toughest class was probably Constitutional Law II. There were many different court cases to keep straight."
Favorite moments at Carthage: "Because of the small size of the classes at Carthage, I like the fact that the majority of the students who take the Criminal Justice classes know each other personally."
Favorite spot on campus: "Anywhere on campus that you can look (or hear on a nice day) the waves hitting the shore. It's peaceful, especially during finals week!"
Biggest surprises so far: "I'm very surprised at how fast the time is going. I cannot believe that I am supposed to be graduating in only three more semesters!"
"Being part of the Mock Trial Team has been a great experience and helped me understand how the legal system functions through the eyes of lawyers." Read more ...
