She received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989 for her service to the College and achievement in her profession. When Susan was in college, she was a member of the Carthage Choir, Pi Delta Chi, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and Youth for Christ. She says, "Although one usually thinks of the college years as preparing for a career those of us who experienced the 'Carthage commitment' realize that a Carthage education means so much more than that. A degree from Carthage signifies excellent skill training, but it also reflects a faculty which fosters creativity and encourages an appreciation for the arts and the development of spiritual values. The 'Carthage commitment' means developing the whole person to face the future…whatever that future may hold."
