ESNS

Major advantages for your future!

What is ESNS?

The Entrepreneurial Studies in the Natural Sciences (ESNS) Program is a unique offering at Carthage. The program provides you with the opportunity to develop skills and opportunities in the business and professional world. It is a complement to your liberal arts studies.

The ESNS Program is based on a one-year course sequence normally taken during your junior year, covering all of the aspects of technology business. The summer following the junior year is devoted to a hands-on internship experience, while your senior year includes a detailed technology business project. This mixture of project work, hands-on experience, and preparatory course work provides you the best training, gives you the best preparation before entering a career, and results in a product that you can use to show your capabilities. All of these improve your likelihood of successfully obtaining a job and improve your chances for advancement after graduation.

The course work emphasizes integration of important skills, such as written and oral communication, graphics and artwork, business accounting, management, and marketing, with the important aspects of legal issues, regulation, and intellectual property. In addition the course covers the characteristics of all types of technology businesses. The courses are taught by many different Carthage faculty, and include outside speakers from many specialty areas, including local and national business leaders.

The ESNS Minor

The program is offered as a minor, although students may enroll in ESNS 310, 325, and 320 as elective courses. The minor in ESNS consists of 20 credits of coursework.

Internship Requirement

In addition, all students enrolled in the minor are required to participate in an internship during the summer preceding enrollment in ESNS 410. This must be arranged with the insturctor in order to be properly approved.

Junior Symposium

Students can elect to enroll in a Junior Symposium consisting of ESNS 310 and 320 and an additional four-credit project course during the Junior year.

Admission Preferences

Students who are enrolled as majors in the Natural Science Division will have priority entry into these courses.
