Faculty Doings
Bill Kuhn
(Please note Professor Kuhn will be on leave for the 2003-2004 academic year. He is in London doing research on his next book)
Following the publication last May of Bill Kuhn´s second book Henry and Mary Ponsonby: Life at the Court of Queen Victoria, he has been in demand as a speaker and analyst. In September he appeared on a British television program entitled "Reputations: Prince Albert." He provided historical background on how Queen Victoria´s husband was perceived in 19th century England. He expects that the program will be re-broadcast in the near future as part of A&E´s popular Biography series.
Stephanie Mitchell
Before joining the Carthage History Department this fall, Stephanie completed her Ph.D., at St. Antony´s College, Oxford University. Her dissertation, ":La Noble Mujer Organizada," is a study of the women´s movement in Mexico in the 1930´s. She is currently working with a Latin Americanist at the University of Manchester on a book entitled, The Women´s Revolution. This edited collection on the role that women played in the Mexican Revolution and post revolution periods is intended for classroom use. She is also preparing a paper to be presented at the annual conference of the Organization of American Historians in March, 2003. The paper will discuss Mexican women"s political participation in the pre-suffrage era.
John Neuenschwander
A third edition of his booklet, Oral History And The Law, was published by the Oral History Association in October. This latest edition represents a significant revision and expansion of the 1993 edition. Revisions and updates include recent cases, additional legal release forms and four new chapters dealing with oral history and the internet, institutional review boards, oral history as evidence, and the duty to report a crime. The booklet is designed to assist oral historians and their legal advisors in their understanding of the legal issues that apply to the field. He also had an article, "Historians as Expert Witnesses: The View from the Bench" published in the August issue of the OAH Newsletter.
Tom Noer
In October, he presented a paper on G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams and the civil rights movement at the Northern Great Plains History conference in Minneapolis. The paper summarized one of the chapters in his almost completed biography of the former governor and state department official. Grants from the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation and the John F. Kennedy Library have greatly assisted Tom in researching this biography.
Steve Udry
Steve Udry spent the summer working on a translation of a 19th century Manchu - language ritual book, a document unearthed while in Beijing last January. He is currently putting together an article based on this document and will present his initial findings at an Asian Studies conference in January 2003. He is also preparing to teach a new course on shamanism and the state for the Spring term.
