Chinese at Carthage

In our global age at the end of the 20th century, with the current rapid economic growth in Asia, more and more people have come to realize that China is not so much a country as it is an entire civilization. In East Asia, China’s cultural role is identified with that of Greece in European civilization. The present population of China is 1.2 billion people. Chinese is also widely spoken in Southeast Asia and is currently one of the five great world languages. Today, the knowledge of Chinese culture, society, and language opens tremendous opportunities. Students who enter the workforce with the ability to use Chinese seem to have an increasing edge in the job market and business world. In response to this, the Carthage faculty has added Chinese to existing foreign language classes.
