What Do Modern Language Majors Do?

Before coming to Senegal many people told me that I need to get out of Dakar from time to time, so that I can experience the 'real Africa.' Two months ago, I didn't really understand what was meant by that statement, but now things have been made a little clearer. Leaving Dakar for a week, and traveling 8 hours south opened up my eyes to another side, another beautiful side of Senegal.

Opportunities to Study Abroad

"Going to Cuernavaca, Mexico was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I learned so much about the language, the culture, the people, and myself while I was there. School was not about grades, but making sure you were learning and having fun while you were doing it. Having such small classes made it easy to fully immerse yourself in learning Spanish. I feel that my confidence has grown in speaking Spanish as well as my vocabulary and my ability to use the right tenses."

Spotlight on the Modern Language Faculty

Richard Sperber
Richard Sperber, Assistant Professor of Modern Languages

"Having lived one half of my life in Germany and the other in the States, I enjoy learning from different cultures and finding out how people from other cultures think about their own lives in particular and the world in general. In addition, teaching Spanish keeps me in touch with the Hispanic world and its multiple cultures. Cultural encounters also play a big role in my research, which has lately focused on travel literature, indigenous writings, and the legacies of colonialism."

Target Language Experts

"I am Celia Delplace, a TLE at Carthage. I come from France, more precisely I come from Caen, a city in Normandie. Normandie is a region that is located in northwestern France. Caen is a nice city near the sea. The university there is bigger but still it is nice because there some lawns where the students can sit, to study in the sun, or simply to chat. When I came to Carthage, everything seemed small to me at first. I like it because I have found that you can meet and know people more easily here."
