Courses in the Department of Mathematics help students to acquire methods of logical reasoning and deduction and to develop problem-solving skills for a wide variety of applications. They also provide techniques for the description and analysis of physical and social phenomena. Department courses can be chosen to provide a foundation for graduate work, to prepare for the teaching profession, or to equip one for careers using problem-solving and analytical abilities. Click on the Math Courses link at the top of the page to see the course requirements for a mathematics major. A senior thesis is also required of every Carthage student. Mathematics majors usually do an undergraduate research project to fulfill this requirement. For many mathematics students, this project is the highlight of their college learning experience.
