The Mathematics Department at Carthage has a vibrant undergraduate research program. All students are required to write a Senior Thesis, and most students do substantial research in one or more of their courses (which may sometimes be used as a senior thesis). Many students do additional research in independent study courses, or through the SURE program. The Natural Science Division has established the SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) Program, funded by a grant from the Kresge Foundation, so that students from across the natural sciences can receive a stipend to live on campus for the summer while doing significant research with a faculty member. Usually one mathematics student per summer is invited to participate in the SURE program.

Carthage students speak at many undergraduate research conferences. In the past five years, approximately 30 students have given talks at regional, state and national meetings sponsored by the MAA or Pi Mu Epsilon. Carthage faculty members are also regular presenters at state and national MAA meetings. Recent undergraduate research papers by Carthage students have appeared in thePi Mu Epsilon Journal and The Pentagon. Papers co-authored by faculty and students have appeared in Mathematics Magazine. The department also publishes its own online journal, Sine On the Dotted Line.
