What To Do With A Major In Political Science?

Students have a variety of paths they may choose to follow upon completion of a bachelor's degree in Political Science. The political science major strengthens a multitude of skills within an individual that are beneficial in a variety of fields. These skills include communication, both written and oral, research, and critical and analytical thinking. Although there are a variety of options you could decide to pursue in graduate school or government service, a political science degree is also the perfect foundation for someone who plans to enter the workforce after graduation.

Some areas of employment that could be considered after completing the bachelor's degree in Political Science include public service sector positions including international affairs and positions found with non-government organizations, or federal and local jobs. Political campaigning positions or work in government offices are also readily available. One of the best ways to find a job in government is by first volunteering to assist either a political campaign or to obtain an internship that may lead to a paid position. Other areas that correlate well with a degree in political science include teaching, journalism, and business. Many jobs may require additional education that could be provided by the employer rather than obtaining the degree independently. If an individual is interested in teaching at the precollegiate level for example, a number of options are available based on demand in various areas in order to obtain certification. Similarly, many companies have programs that assist individuals in completing the required business courses as compared to completing a degree through a business school. An advisor from the political science department could aid in directing someone interested in one of these fields.

For those students planning to continue on in their educational endeavors, the political science degree provides a basis for a number of options. Students interested in specialized fields may choose to continue toward a Master's degree program in that field. Law school is yet another option that many political science students choose to pursue. For those who intend to work toward a Ph.D. in political science there are job opportunities that exist in teaching at the college level. In addition there are jobs in research analysis with "think tanks" and research institutions as well as positions with the government. Clearly, a political science degree offers a significant amount of flexibility for students who care about societal issues and politics as a whole.

A political science degree offers a significant amount of flexibility for students whether they want to be involved in politics or work in the business community. The key issue is that a political science major is for anyone.
