Meet Chumley

"The Economics Department at Carthage is diverse culturally and in its economic view, which allows students to see and study all different topics and viewpoints."

Hometown: Appleton, Wis.

Majors: Economics and International Political Economy

Minor: Geography

Chumley Hodgson wants a career that will take him around the world. So he's double-majoring in Economics and International Political Economy.

"I wanted to do something that is international in aspect," he says, adding that he has enjoyed economics since high school.

The Economics Department at Carthage is "diverse culturally and in its economic view, which allows students to see and study all different topics and viewpoints," he says. "You can ask any professor in the department a random econ question and they can probably answer it on the spot."

While at Carthage, Chumley has played on the tennis team and taken a wide variety of classes ranging from Meditation to International Management, Religion in Society to International Trade and Finance.

"Last J-Term, I traveled to China and had the time of my life," he says. "I have researched a lot on renewable energies. I have written probably five different papers on topics that somehow included or were connected to renewable energies."

"One of the things I like best about Carthage is how students and faculty develop relationships," he continues. "It is always nice knowing who your professor is and knowing that if you have a problem, you can go and see any of your professors.  If you see them walking around campus, they will stop and talk to you, even if you haven't had them since you were a freshman and now you're a senior. They are genuinely interested in your success."

Favorite professor: "Professor McClintock. I love his accent, humor, the way he relates to his students and how he can be a bit edgy compared to some of the others in the department."

Favorite class: "Economic Geography, because it really allowed me to combine my two biggest interests in econ and geography. I liked the idea of taking economic data and putting it into a visual aid like a map."

Toughest class: "Econ 103, because although I took an econ class in high school, it was a real eye opener to what college was and what econ really entailed. It showed me that there was more than just supply and demand."

Favorite moments at Carthage: "I joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity and we went on a road trip all the way to New York and stayed at other chapters along the way for a week. Some of my other favorite moments are just the random things that happen in the dorms at all hours of the day."

Favorite spot on campus: "Lakeside on a warm day watching a thunderstorm over the lake."

Career goal: "To see the world and travel. Working in an Embassy would be pretty cool."

Biggest surprise so far: "That the teaching styles where you think you are not really learning all that much are the classes you remember the most from."
