For students who want to pursue a license in early childhood education, Carthage offers a joint program with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Carthage students enroll in specific UW-Parkside courses that lead to an early childhood education license (birth to 8 years of age). Students enrolled full-time at Carthage during the fall or spring term may take a UW-Parkside course that same term without paying additional tuition. Please check with your teacher education advisor.
The Center for Children’s Literature at Carthage is a nationally recognized collection that informs and inspires educators, parents, college students and librarians to develop a love of reading in children. The center has more than 25,000 recent children’s and young adult titles for kindergarten through high school. Nearly 2,500 new volumes are added each year.
The Center gives education students access to information about children's literature, authors and illustrators, as well as organized reading programs, lectures, seminars and workshops. Education professor Marilyn Ward helps direct the Center for Children's Literature, in addition to teaching courses in Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Creative Arts, Social Studies Methods, Poetry Theatre, Gifted and Talented Education, and dance.
Carthage hosts regular meetings with education leaders in Kenosha and Racine, as well as Education faculty and Carthage President F. Gregory Campbell. These meetings allow Education faculty to engage in an ongoing dialogue about education in southeastern Wisconsin, and discuss how the Teacher Education Program can work to meet the needs of the Kenosha Unified and Racine Unified school districts. These meetings result in grant opportunities for new programs at Carthage and leadership development.
Carthage offers graduate studies in education through the Adult Education Department. Through evening studies, students can earn their Master in Education, add additional teaching licenses to their existing professional license, or complete course work for personal enrichment. The Graduate Studies in Education program also offers accelerated certification for teachers and continuing education courses for state-licensed teachers.
