Student WEA

Committee Information

Join a committee! Membership on a committee is a great way to get more involved with Student WEA. The more you get involved in WEA, the more points you get towards being considered an advanced member. At the same time, you will build your resume, portfolio, gain leadership experience and have the opportunity to help the community.

Committee Information

The Activities Committee

Contact Katie Hetzner
In Activities Committee, we plan and organize social and annual events such as the homecoming activities. We also organize National Education Week and StWEA’s involvement in Relay for Life. We also plan fun get-togethers for members of StWEA such as game nights, movie nights and other fun get-togethers.

The Activities Committee has been getting a team ready for Relay for Life, which takes place at Carthage April 8-9. The event begins at 6 p.m. April 8 and continues until 6 a.m. on April 9. Sign up by going to www.relayforlife.org/carthage, clicking "sign up" then "join a team," and search for Carthage StWEA. We are also in the process of planning an activity for the members of StWEA for the month of March, after Spring Break.

The Fundraising Committee

Contact Jenni Farlow
The main fundraisers we do in WEA are book sales and selling chili at the homecoming celebration. This is a great committee to be on if you are looking for more involvement in WEA.

The Grants Committee

Contact Katie Fitzgerald
One of the goals of the Grants Committee is to get the members of StWEA (that's you!) involved in the community. As a committee member you'll be helping me implement the grant ideas which include organizing and preparing materials and learning more about how the grants process works.

The Professional Development Committee

Contact Jenny Brown
This committee is in charge of finding fun and interesting speakers for our meetings. We will also be planning mini professional development seminars on relevant topics such as resume writing. So if you want an opportunity to grow and learn more about the teaching profession, you should join me and my committee in making this a great year for Student WEA!

The Public Relations Committee

Contact Molly Lawrence
If you like to be creative, love Student WEA, and are interested in promoting our organization on campus, then this is the committee for you. This committee is responsible for making sure WEA is well known on campus. We will put up flyers about upcoming meetings and events, keep a facebook group and events updated, chalk campus to let our members know what's going on, and so much more!

The Service Committee

Contact Lauren Shaler
Being a part of this committee is great way to become actively involved in StWEA while getting out of class experience and making connections. Volunteering is great to do not only for yourself but also for the community! Examples of what we do are pen pals, Family Fun Nights, tutoring, and much more!

Events for the Center for Children's Literature Committee

Contact Maggie Hunsinger
This committee helps to bring children and the community together. This year we will be volunteering when well-known authors come to campus. Some of our other events include: Seuss-a-thon where we read books by Dr. Seuss to children from the community, along with featuring musical acts to celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss. We also participate in Shelf Elf and in May we volunteer at the Battle of the Books in KUSD. Anyone who loves books, bringing communities together, getting a chance to meet authors, and seeing professional literature presentations, should definitely join the Center for Children's Literature Committee.

"The experience I am getting in the field is far beyond what I had expected. When I am finished with my courses, I know I will feel well-equipped to student-teach because of the experiences Carthage has provided for me."

— Katie Crimmins, '12, Arlington Heights, Ill.
