Relay for Life April 2011

The Activities Committee has been getting a team ready for Relay for Life which takes place at Carthage April 8-9. The event begins at 6 p.m. April 8 and continues until 6 a.m. April 9. Sign up by going to www.relayforlife.org/carthage, clicking "sign up" then "join a team," and searching for Carthage StWEA. We are also in the process of planning an activity for the members of StWEA for the month of March, after Spring Break.

National recognition for Student WEA chapter

In its 16 years of existence, the Carthage chapter of the Student Wisconsin Education has grown from six to 128 members and become one of the more visible groups on campus. This summer Marilyn Ward, professor of education, the only advisor the chapter has had, was named Advisor of the Year at the National Education Association student leadership conference in San Diego. Service Committee Update

The Service Committee held two big events this fall that went over very well: Fun n’ Fit was a great experience for everyone who volunteered to help out. Family Fun Night, where we did the theme of "Where the Wild Things Are," was an amazing night. We had a great turnout and had a very Wild Rumpus night. The event included readings and hands-on activities. There was crown-making in addition to a wild rumpus sing along. Thank you to everyone that helped out at either event! The committee is now helping out at Harvey Elementary School in the library, so if you would like more information please contact Maggie Hunsinger. At our next meeting we will start planning Day in the Life of a College Student and Pen Pals for our projects for Spring Semester. E-mail Maggie to help out or for more information on what else the Service Committee is doing for the rest of the year.

Grant Committee Update

The Grant Committee has been working hard on Student WEA's fall grant "Read Across Wisconsin," which is a reading program for fourth-graders at Jerstad-Agerholm Elementary School in Racine. The students "raced" their way from Kenosha to Bayfield, Wis., by counting the number of minutes they read. Each minute they read was equivalent to one mile. Students tracked their progress on Wisconsin roadmaps. As a part of the program, Student WEA members visited weekly for about a month to lead the students in Wisconsin themed lessons and help them track their progress. Students who completed the race received a copy of the book "B is for Badger," a certificate, and a T-shirt. The top three students who read for the most minutes will get to read at the annual Seuss-a-thon event on Feb. 27, 2010.
