


Douglas Arion came to Carthage in 1994 to establish the ScienceWorks program. Before coming to Carthage, he had a long career at Science Applications International Corporation, where he was assistant vice president and manager of the Applied Physics and Engineering Division. In this role, he was responsible for marketing and managing more than $6 million in division business. At SAIC, he specialized in the development of diagnostic instrumentation, design and fielding of experiments and tests, and theoretical and numerical analyses.
In addition to directing ScienceWorks, Dr. Arion is also a member of the physics and astronomy department at Carthage, and conducts research with students at major observatories around the country, as well as developing scientific instrumentation for many different fields.
He helped found the Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation, a technology business development center in Racine, Wis., and provides strategic planning and technology evaluation to companies in the region. Listed in Who's Who in the West, American Men and Women of Science, and Who's Who of Business Leaders, Dr. Arion holds a patent on the Blast Induced Emission of Radiation (BIER) Gage (US Patent 5,315,364). He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Astronomical Society, Sigma Xi, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Arion earned his A.B. in physics from Dartmouth College and his M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland.
