Hometown: Fairbury, Ill.
Major: Mathematics and Pre-Engineering
Minor: ESNS
Mathematics major Trevor Whately plans to run his own engineering firm someday. He believes that Carthage's ScienceWorks program will help him get there.
"It has made me more professional in understanding the full aspects of planning the development of a business," he said.
Trevor enrolled in the ESNS program last year. Now enrolled in ESNS 410: Technology Based Business Project Development, he's currently developing a new product and business plan. "It's a new baseball/softball hitting tee, with attachments that introduce added versatility to the market," he said.
He's also had an internship with Andrews Civil and Environmental Engineering firm, where he performed topographic surveys with GPS equipment. That internship allowed him to get Nuclear Density Gauge-certified, which involved him taking soil compaction tests for the E.P.A.
Favorite professor: "Professor Aaron Trautwein because I can talk to him about anything. As my advisor, he's helped me plan my academic progress and career transition. Also, Professor Doug Arion because of how much I have learned from his wide breadth of knowledge and his high expectations for every student. That constantly pushes you."
Favorite class: "The class I am currently taking — ESNS 410 Technology Based Business Project/Development — because I get to try and market an innovative new product."
Toughest class: "CSCI 111 Principles of Computer Science. My mind does not work or comprehend computer language with all the symbols and jumbled code."
Favorite moment at Carthage: "Starting as the lead-off hitter and right fielder for the Carthage Red Men Baseball team that took third in the nation last year was the most fun-filled, team-camaraderie sporting experience I've had to date."
Career goal: "To run my own engineering firm."
Favorite spot on campus: "Hitting Center or hot tub."
Advice for prospective students considering participation in ScienceWorks: "Plan ahead and soak up every piece of information."

"This class has been one of my favorites, and I was always excited to go to it. You managed to emphasize the points on how things really work, rather than focusing on the theory of how they should work. Most importantly, the biggest skill learned was how to critically think. ... I have made sure to recommend this class to all my friends and hopefully they will take it."
"I forgot to give you the good news. I got the job as a Java developer. In my interview, we spent the first hour or so talking about the ESNS program, then only talked about technical skills for about 30 minutes. I greatly appreciate what you and the program have done for me."
"In my current position, I often deal with many entrepreneurs and business plans, which led me to remember my time at Carthage in the ESNS program. ... When I graduated from Carthage, I never could have imagined that I would be an attorney. I use the information I learned in ESNS on nearly a daily basis."
