On May 17 and 18, 2008, a History Institute for high school teachers entitled “America in the Civil War Era, 1829-77” will be presented at Carthage College. As part of the History Institute, the public is invited to hear “Honest Abe: Abraham Lincoln and the Moral Character,” a lecture by Daniel Walker Howe, Emeritus Professor of History, UCLA. Introduction and comments will be made by Prof. Thomas Noer, Valor Distinguished Professor in Humanities and Professor of History at Carthage College. The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. Sat., May 17, 2008 at the Best Western Harborside Inn, 5125 6th Ave., Kenosha, WI. Co-sponsors of the institute are the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Clausen Center for World Business at Carthage College and Adult Education at Carthage College. This is the second such institute for teachers at Carthage College. In 1996, the Foreign Policy Research Institute inaugurated a series of weekend history institutes for secondary school teachers. Chaired by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Walter McDougall and FPRI Senior Fellow David Eisenhower, the history institutes are designed to bring high school teachers from around the country together with the nation’s top scholars on world history and politics. The history institutes offer intensive weekends of lectures and discussion on selected topics. Material from past history institutes can be found on FPRI’s website: www.fpri.org. |
