Week 1
Review
calculus, including derivatives, integration, improper integrals, and double
integrals.
9/9:
Enroll in the Blackboard site for this course. (Yes, this is part of your assignment!) If you have any trouble, view this page through Internet Explorer. We will use Blackboard extensively, and you need to be enrolled right away.
First, you need to review calculus, particularly derivatives and integrals. While studying, you should only use an exam approved calculator - that means no graphing calculators! I have included a list of sample problems below, but you should read the chapters, re-work the examples, and do more exercises that I suggest!
Sample problems: (SM is the Smith and
Minton calculus book that most of you used)
- In SM, Chapter 2 Review Problems 23-46, 53-60.
- In SM, Chapter 4 Review Problems 1-20, 47-60.
- In SM, page 390 problems 21-26 all.
- In SM, Chapter 13 Review Problems, 3, 4, 6, 7, 25, 26, 33.
- In SM, page 1044, problems 37-42 all.
Start memorizing the study sheet.

Continue calculus review
9/14: Continue reviewing calculus as outlined above. You should take the first quiz before Friday.
Week 3
Probability and Calculus and all material we've covered up to now
9/21:
Read Section 5.7 in SM. Re-work all of the examples.
Do exercises 1-31, 35-38 from Section 5.7.
Week 4
Basic Probability
and all material we've covered up to now
9/28: In Probability for Risk Management by Hassett and Stewart (HS from now on), read chapter 2, re-work all of the examples, and do all of the exercises.
Week 5
Conditional
Probability and Combinatorial Probability and all material we've covered up to now
10/5: In HS, read chapter 3 and do all of the exercises.
Week 6
Combinatorial Probability and Probability Distributions and all material we've covered up to now
10/126: Read chapters 4 and 5 in HS and do all of the exercises. Also, review section 5.7 in your calc text, and study exponential and uniform distributions.
Week 7
Frequently Used Distributions, Discrete and Continuous
and all material we've covered up to now
10/19: Read Chapters 7 and 8 in HS and do all of the exercises.
10/21: Today, you will take a one-hour simulated actuarial exam in class. Your score will affect your mid-term grade.
Week 8
Moment Generating Functions
10/26: Re-read chapters 5 and 8, paying particular attention to moment generating functions.
10/30: Last day to drop a course with a W.
