Business Meeting Wisconsin Section of the MAA April 21, 2001 St. Norbert College 1. The meeting was called to order at 8:02 a.m. by Chair Bhagat Singh. Approximately 50 members were in attendance. 2. Matchett presented minutes of last year's business meeting in Superior. He also presented his Treasurer's Report. Both were approved. The present meeting is going well, he reported, and the number of participants appears to be higher than usual. Special thanks are extended to the three publishers who are participating with excellent book and software displays. They are McGraw-Hill (represented by Jennifer Lewis and Linda Lampe), Prentice Hall (represented by Mike Perman), and Harcourt-Brace (represented by Lisa Miller). 3. Rick Tufte gave his Governor's report. The first item was Mathfest, which will be August 2-4, 2001 in Madison. Rick encouraged everyone to attend and to urge colleagues to attend. Another item of interest is the big increase in funding on the horizon for mathematics education. 4. The two nominations for Chair-elect were Mark Snavely (Carthage College) and Jonathan Kane (UW - Whitewater). Mindful of the election difficulties last year in Florida (butterfly ballots, pregnant chads), and even worse in Superior (tie vote at WI Section business meeting requiring hand counted revote), Chair Singh had taken the precaution of printing up ballots with extra large check boxes, both aligned on same side of ballot. The ballots were distributed. 5. Aaron Trautwein, Public Information Officer-Liaison Coordinator reported on Math Awareness Week and on his and Charlotte Chell's visits to UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, and Marquette University. The purpose of the visits is to inform graduate students about the MAA. Madison is visited every other year, and in alternate years UW-Milwaukee and Marquette. Announcement of election results: Jonathan Kane is the new Chair-Elect. 6. Tony Thomas reported on student participation, which is up at this meeting partly because of the very active Pi Mu Epsilon chapter at St. Norbert College. A Pi Mu Epsilon regional conference will take place at St. Norbert College Nov. 2-3, 2001. 7. Bhagat Singh was pleased to name Linda Uselmann, Edgewood College, the new Wisconsin High School MAA Math Contest Coordinator. Linda will work with Ken Jewel and Steven Post on this. John Symms reported on the contests this past year. There were 90 schools that participated in the AMC contests and 106 that participated in the State Contest. The winners of the Wisconsin Section Math Contest prize were Po Ru Loh (first place) and Yian Zhang (second place). Symms thanked Azar Khosravani, UW-Oshkosh, and Mark Beintema, UW-Fox Valley for their excellent work in coordinating last year's contest. Thanks were also given to Prof. Jeganathan Sriskandarajah, known to all as Sri, for another excellent year coordinating the National MAA Math Contests. 8. Bhagat Singh named Benjamin V. C. Collins, of UW-Platteville, the new Project NExT Wisconsin director. Ben will be taking over from Jennifer Szydlik, UW-Oshkosh. Jennifer was director from April, 1998, until April, 2001. 9. Future Meeting Sites. The 2002 Annual Spring Meeting will be at Ripon College on April 12-13. There was discussion of sites for 2003. It was moved and seconded that the 2003 meeting shall be at UW-Marathon (Wausau, WI). That motion passed readily. For 2004 and beyond, Madison Area Technical College, UW-Washington, and UW-Whitewater have expressed interest. 10. Bhagat Singh named Kathy Muhs, of St. Norbert College, the next Wisconsin Section Newsletter Editor. Kathy will be taking over from Richard Snyder, UW-Eau Claire, who has served as Newsletter Editor since April, 1991, two 5-year terms. 11. Jim Marty reported on activities of the Wisconsin Math Council. As the new editor of the Wisconsin Mathematics Teacher, he is looking for articles. 12. At the end of the meeting, Bhagat Singh thanked the Section for the opportunity to serve for the past two years as chair-elect and chair and declared that it is a nice experience to have. Bhagat is retiring from his position at UW-Manitowoc this year but allowed he will probably teach a course or two in the future. Also he will continue on the Wisconsin Section Executive Board as Past Chair. 13. Adjournment at 8:45 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Andy Matchett Secretary/treas.
