Business Meeting
Wisconsin Section of the MAA
April 26, 2008
Madison Area Technical College

1. The meeting was called to order at 8:05 by Section Chair, Mohammad Ahmadi. Mohammad thanked our hosts at MATC, particularly Site Coordinator Jeganathan Sriskandarajah, and Andy Matchett, Chair Elect, for an excellent meeting.

2. The minutes of the business meeting of April, 2007, and the current treasurer's report were approved. The treasurer noted that the section is in good shape financially.

3. John Koker presented his Governor's report, and took the opportunity to encourage members to attend Mathfest in Madison, July 31-August 1. Members should check out the new features on the MAA website. There are math photos, features on math in the news (updated daily), and the new math classifieds section. The math classifieds include math related jobs at all degree levels. As far as MAA membership goes, there was no dues increase this year, and retention improved as well. The Carriage House is very impressive, and John recommended that everyone who visits the Washington D.C. area should stop by for a tour. The MAA is selling bricks to pay for some of the work, and urged the section and individuals to consider buying a brick. Strategic planning is in Cycle III, focusing on individual sections. Richard Cleary from the MAA added that the MAA facilities are managed very efficiently, and encouraged us to make employers aware of the math classifieds section of the MAA website. Chair Mohammad Ahmadi thanked John for his service as Section Governor!

4. Robert Wilson from UW-Madison was elected Chair-Elect of the section. Congratulations Bob!

5. The Spring Meeting for 2009 will be at UW-La Crosse, April 24-25.  In 2010, we will meet at UW-Oshkosh, and in 2011 we will meet at UW-Stout.

6. The student math contest winners were Peter Wear and Zef Rosnbrick, both of Madison West High School. Congratulations to both winners.

7. Ben Collins requested nominees for "Know Your Wisconsin Mathematician," especially those including the phrase, "...and I'll conduct the inverview."

8.  Ken Price and Steve Szydlik did a fantastic job setting up the Face Off! competition, and they are willing to do it again next year.  Send potential game show questions to Ken or Steve. Their efforts in Student Activities have been focused on Face Off! and providing a retreat room for students.

9.  Irfan Ul-Haq encouraged new faculty to join Wisconsin-NExT. Wisconsin-NExT holds two events per year, and individuals can remain members until tenure.

10. Sri reported on efforts to find new mathematicians to spotlight in the "Know Your Wisconsin Mathematician" column.

11. We thanked Jeganathan Sriskandarajah for 3 years on the Executive Board.

12. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Snavely
Secretary/Treasurer
