Project NExT-Wisconsin Report to MAA Wisconsin Section Executive Committee September 19, 2003 Prepared by Benjamin V.C. Collins collinbe@uwplatt.edu Project NExT-WI has 34 enrolled members. Recruitment was light this fall. There was a mix-up in the mail, and at least some of my recruiting material didn't arrive at all. The workshop was also very early in the year -- the end of the second week of classes for many schools -- which made it harder for a brand new faculty member to get away. I intend to send follow-up letters to all my potential recruits, inviting them to join even though the workshop is past. If they get on our mailing list, they will have some idea of what we are doing. Twenty-one people attended the fall workshop. The presenters, Allan Rossman and Beth Chance of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, did a fine job. One participant told me on Friday morning, after only the opening activity Thursday evening, that that activity had been worth the price of admission. It's clear that the workshop was more valuable for those of us who teach stats regularly. Those who don't teach stats were a little less excited about it. I'm going to try to get a speaker for next year who is more general. Hot off the presses: Our presenter for the Fall 2004 meeting will be Sr. Barbara Reynolds of Cardinal Stritch University. She will run a workshop on Cooperative Learning in the Mathematics Classroom. The dates are Sept. 30 - Oct. 2, 2004. I hesitate to even write this, but the "Project NExT-Wisconsin Speaker Series" is almost a reality. We had a lot of people add talks at the workshop. As soon as those get typed up, we plan to send the list to department chairs. I don't yet have plans for the Spring meeting. I'm taking suggestions. Respectfully, Benjamin V.C.
