MAA - Wisconsin Section Executive Committee Meeting January 31, 2003 Present: Clare Hemenway (Annual Meeting arrangements), Jon Kane, Andy Matchett, Kathy Muhs, Rick Poss, Mark Snavely, John Symms, Aaron Trautwein The meeting began at 4:00 p.m., Jon Kane presiding. 1. The minutes of the meeting of September 27, 2002 were approved. 2. The treasurer's report was presented and approved. The NExT budget is right on target as is the general budget. Here we have an example of good management (albeit on a small scale). 3. Rick Poss presented his governor's report. In these times of corporate scandal and mismanaged public budgets it is interesting to note that the MAA has a very high members-to-staff ratio and is solvent and doing very well. The organization has only 9 salaried staff members. Here we have an example of good management on a rather large scale. Electronic voting is coming for section governors and MAA officers. It has been certified by legal counsel as ok in Illinois, the corporate home state of the MAA. Also former governors standing in for governors who cannot make a meeting of the board of governors may vote. Others standing in may not. 4. Jon Kane reported on the section officers' meeting held in January. New programs of interest are PMET (Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers), PREP workshops for summer to show faculty how to run undergraduate research, and SIGMAA workshops at section meetings. We have not been contacted by any SIGMAA about a workshop at our annual meeting which is coming up in April. Other items of interest include Dick Gibbs setpping down as AMC director and Elgin Johnston stepping up. Many sections now have electronic newsletters. The MAA has published a textbook on mathematics for business decisions. 5. John Symms reported on the mathematics competitions. Edgewood College is doing an excellent job with the Wisconsin MAA math contest. The faculty members running the show are Ken Jewel, Steve Post, and Linda Uselmann. 6. Mark Snavely brought the committee up to date on plans for the spring meeting which he is organizing. Interestingly, 8 of the 12 talks were submitted online via the website Mark created for the purpose. So that is working. Clare was given the go-ahead to hold the banquet lecture in a different room from the banquet, itself. The banquet will be $17.00 for regular participants and $5.00 for students. Speakers will be David Stone, Deanna Hansberger, and Steve Kennedy. Herb Kasube will give an hour discussion on CUPM recommendations. We approved $50 per panelist for graduate students on the panel, $150 for each of Hansberger and Kennedy. Andy will be in touch with Clare about meeting arrangements, refreshment budget, etc. The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Andy Matchett Secretary/treas.
