Executive Committee Meeting January 30, 2004 UW-Center Baraboo Present: Ben Collins, Jayanthi Ganapathy, Jon Kane, Kristin Lampe, Andy Matchett, Kathy Muhs, Rick Poss, Mark Snavely, Tony Thomas, Aaron Trautwein. 1. The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m., Chair Snavely presiding. Matchett presented the minutes of the September meeting and his treasurer's report. Both were approved modulo minor corrections. 2. Rick Poss gave the Governor's Report. Remodeling of the Washington headquarters is complete, and the MAA is in good shape financially. Online membership renewal is coming. The MAA and NCTM are engaged in developing a joint position paper on Calculus in Secondary Schools. Rick noted that he is looking for input on this subject from Wisconsin Section members. There will be a panel discussion on this topic at the Annual Spring Meeting this year. 3. Mark Snavely and Jon Kane reported on the Section Officers' Meeting at the January MAA/AMS meeting. This led to a discussion of the distinguished teaching award. Andy Matchett noted that a candidate has been selected this year and said who it was. That information will become public at the Friday evening banquet at the Spring Meeting. Other topics from the section officers' meeting were Project ACCCESS, the importance of financial reports (with the pointed suggestion for the secretary that punctuality is important), web based publication of the Newsletter, and written guidelines for Chair-Elect and for the Annual Meeting Site Coordinator. On the latter subject, Clare Hemenway already has written up some guidelines for the Site Coordinator. 4. Kristin Lampe is on maternity leave, and so the report on math contests will be postponed. Titu Andrescu conducted an experimental web based math contest out of UW - Whitewater. Ninety schools participated. That was in December, 2003. 5. Kathy Muhs conducted a discussion on the Newsletter. The details of the procedure for publishing the newsletter via the web were clarified. The final decision was to have a final paper copy this spring and then in the Fall discontinue mailing hard copies to all members. 6. Jayanthi Ganapathy led a discussion of the spring meeting program. Eight to ten graduate students are needed for the graduate student panel. Mary Ellen Rudin will give two talks! There will be a reception for from 5:15 to 6:30. What about a separate reception for students? The committee approved this. 7. Tony Thomas expressed a wish to transfer his job to another person in the next year or so. He will write a newsletter article soliciting applicants for the position (Student Activities Coordinator). Tony has been serving in this position since 1995. 8. Ben Collins reported that the Project NExT speaker list is now functional. It is hoped this will become a well used resource for high schools and colleges. 9. Aaron Trautwein asked that math awareness activities be communicated to him so that he can publicize them appropriately. 10. Adjournment at 6:05 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Andy Matchett and running.
