Executive Committee Meeting 2510 Stewart Avenue, Wausau April 26, 2003 Present: Matchett, Tony Thomas, Jonathan Kane, Kathy Muhs, John Symms, Rick Poss, Jim Marty, Mark Snavely 1. This meeting is the Executive Committee's post-Annual Spring Meeting meeting. Andy was late because he got lost on the way to the restaurant. He arrived in time to record some of what transpired. 2. Kristen Lampe will take over on Math Contests. She is a colleague of John Symms at Carroll College. 3. Rick Poss reported that if a governor cannot attend a Governor's meeting, then he or she may appoint a person to go in his or her place. That person may vote if and only if that person is a former Governor. 4. A new committee was brought into being. This will be called the Awards Committee. Jonathan Kane and Phil Straffin will be the two initial members and co-organizers of the committee. 5. It was decided that since Jayanthi Ganapathy cannot attend Mathfest, and since Jon Kane was done out of a trip on his turn to attend Mathfest, that Jon should be the section representative to that meeting. 6. Evaluation of Spring Meeting. - Excellent meeting - Presiders were not appointed for the contributed paper sessions, a slight shortcoming. - Mark Snavely reported that of 34 contributed papers, he received 3 abstracts by U.S. mail, 2 by email and the rest via the registration form he placed on his website. There was some discussion of how to work this next year. - Preliminary indications are that there were more students at the banquet than ever. The decision was made to increase the registration fee to $20.00 rather than increase the cost of the banquet for regular members. Somebody needs to subsidize the student banquet tickets, but it should not be entirely the other banquet participants. 7. Newsletter: The Spring Newsletter was posted on the website by Tony Thomas. But nobody responded to Kathy's request to hear from folks who want to be taken off the regular mailing list and receive only a short notice about the Newsletter being posted. We tried email to alert the membership that the Newsletter had been posted, but the email never went out. There was a big discussion of election procedures. David Stone said that most sections have uncontested elections. We should consider doing the same, was the general consensus. Andy will check into bylaws to see if this is ok. Bylaws being mentioned, the thought occurred that it would be nice to have those posted on the Wisconsin Section website. Andy will post the bylaws on his website and Tony will decide whether to download the document to the Section site or just link to Andy's site. Next meeting: UW-Baraboo, Fri, Sept. 19 2003.
