Meeting called to order at 4:15 p.m. 1. Matchett presented a draft of the minutes of the annual business meeting at St. Norbert College. These were approved. The treasurer's report and report on the annual spring meeting of 2001 were also approved. There was some discussion of funding for the NExT program. 2. Rick Tufte presented his Governor's report. The Wisconsin Section has been complimented on the excellent work that was done to make Mathfest a success. Tina Straly, Jim Tattersal, and Tom Banchoft all made a point of thanking Rick tufte for the Section's work. The meeting went very well and set a new Mathfest attendance record. The MAA will honor Daniel C. Lewin, cofounder of Akamai Technologies, and generous supporter of the AMC, who was in the first plane to crash into the World Trade Center on September 11. Lewin was 31 years old. 3. It was decided that the Section should seek a booksale Coordinator whose sole job in the section would be to run the booksale at the annual spring meeting and take care of the Section's library between meetings. A three to five year renewable term is envisioned for this position. It would be appropriate to have an announcement of this new position in the Newsletter. It was moved and seconded that awards be purchased for presentation at the annual spring meeting in 2002. 4. Ben Collins and Jen Szydlik could not be at the meeting because of the NExT workshop in Menomonie this weekend. The workshop this weekend is the third Wisconsin NExT workshop. The previous speakers were Ed Dubinsky and Fred Rickey. This fall the speaker is Joe Gallian. 5. John Symms reported on the math contests. They are going smoothly at the moment. The good people at Edgewood College are off to an excellent start. The people running the contest are Ken Jewel, Steve Post, and Linda Uselman. The State Contest this year will be on Thursday, Dec. 6. Sri continues to coordinate the National contests. This year Kandasami Muthuval UW-Oshkosh, is once again coordinating the writing of the State contest. The AMC 10, 12 exams will be Feb. 12, 2002. 6. Jon Kane and Kathy discussed changes in the speaker registration form which will be in the center of the Fall Newsletter. The WMC meeting at Green lake could be listed in the calendar for information purposes. 7. There was a discussion of the possibility of publishing the Newsletter electronically. The consensus was this year to publish it in the regular way as it has been done for years. The section should revisit the issue, however, and consider some kind of electronic mailing option for those members who would prefer to receive the newsletter electronically and would like to stop receiving a hard copy in the mail. 8. Jon Kane reported on invited speakers for the spring meeting this academic year. The meeting will be April 12-13, 2002, at Ripon College. So far Martha Siegel has accepted the invitation while several have declined. Jon will continue working on this. Norm Loomer is the local coordinator for the meeting. 9. The Distinguished Teacher selection Committee this year is Don Passman (chair), Ranjan Roy, and Charlotte Chell. Matchett will send the teacher nomination information to that committee. 10. Jim Marty is on the WMC board as MAA representative. Jim wants articles for the Wisconsin Teachers of Mathematics, a journal of which he is editor. 11. The meeting adjourned to the Little Village Restaurant. It was decided that the next meeting would be Jan. 18, 2002, 4:00 p.m. at UW-Baraboo. Respectfully submitted, Andy Matchett Secretary/treas.
