Executive Committee Meeting
Friday, Sept. 21, 2007
Madison Area Technical College

Present: Mohammad Ahmadi, Ben Collins, Kristen Lampe, Jim Marty, Andy Matchett, Ken Price, Mark Snavely, Jeganathan Sriskandarajah, Steve Szydlik, Irfan Ul-Haq.

1.   The meeting was called to order at 4:10 by Jeganathan Sriskandarajah.  Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting of April 21, 2007, and the Report of the Annual Meeting of April 20-21, 2007, were approved.

2. The treasurer's report, presented by Mark Snavely, was approved.

3.  No Governor's Report was given, as John Koker was not in attendance.

4. Kristen Lampe reported that Suhas Kodali of Madison and Cutler Lewandowski achieved perfect scores in the AMC 8 competition. In the high school competitions, Xu Iris scored a perfect score on the AIME. Six Wisconsin students qualified for the US Mathematical Olympiad: Timothy Black and Iris Xu of James Madison Memorial High School, Daniel Mulder of Maranatha Baptist Academy, Samuel Balinghasay of Marshfield High School, Kyle Stankowski of Mosinee Middle School, and Ye Wang of Nicolet High School. The MAA-Wisconsin High School Contest Examination was handled well by UW-Stout. In general, fewer students took the exams than in the past.

5. Andy gave the update on the spring meeting. He has invited Richard Cleary (MAA officer) of Bentley University and Michael Slattery of Marquette University to speak at the meeting. More invitations may be extended.

6. Ben Collins gave the newsletter report. He would like our reports by September 28.

7. Ken Price and Steve Szydlik reported on Student Activities. Face Off! will return at a number of conferences this year, including the Pi Mu Epsilon conference at St. Norbert, MATC, and the MAA meeting in April. Ken and Steve would like to continue to do Face Off!, but would be willing to let someone else take over as Student Coordinator if a suitable candidate is available.

8. Irfan Ul-haq reported that Aparna Higgins will be presenting at the fall Wisconsin NExT meeting September 28-30, 2007. Wisconsin NExT has 27 members, including 5 new members this year.

9. Jim Marty reported for WMC. The 40th Annual WMC meeting (May 1-2, 2008) is looking for speakers. The deadline for submitting proposals is October 1, 2007. He also reported on a conference this fall examining the training of middle school teachers.

10. Nominations were made for Chair-Elect for next year. Names surfaced.  

11. Know your Wisconsin Mathematician will appear in upcoming next newsletter. Many outstanding Wisconsin mathematicians were mentioned as future stars.

12.  Book sale policy was discussed, specifically the section's policy on an author selling their book at a conference. Unless there is a reason not to do so, the section will permit authors to sell their own books at the section meeting.

13. The 2008 section meeting is proposed to be April 25-26 at MATC.  The 2009 section meeting is proposed to be at UW-Lacrosse. The next Executive Board meeting will be on January 25 at 4:00 at MATC.

14.  The meeting adjourned at 6:02 p.m. Dinner at a local restaurant followed.
