Project NExT-Wisconsin Report for Spring Newsletter January 31, 2002 Prepared by Benjamin V.C. Collins collinbe@uwplatt.edu The Fall Meeting of Project NExT-Wisconsin was a resounding success. Joseph Gallian of the University of Minnesota-Duluth gave a workshop on “Building and Maintaining a Research Program for You and Your Undergraduates.” It was an excellent program. Joe's enthusiasm and love for mathematics are contagious. I know I wasn’t the only one who walked away with renewed energy and excitement. After three years as director, Jennifer Szydlik, of UW-Oshkosh, has retired to do bigger and better things. We thank Jen for her patient and faithful service. She built Project NExT-Wisconsin into what I think is really one of the finest section NExTs in the country. The new director, Ben Collins, of UW-Platteville, is known for his intelligence, energy, charm, wit, and most of all, humility. I hope he’ll be able to fill Jen’s considerable shoes. Project NExT-Wisconsin now has a web page, available at http://www.uwplatt.edu/~nextwi/. Although it is still in its embryonic stages, it will get our name and our message out to the mathematical community. Thanks to Mike Lang and Karl Kattchee, both of UW-La Crosse, for putting it together. For the Spring MAA Meeting, we’re planning a panel discussion on “Professional Development, Promotion, and Tenure.” This is a topic of keen interest to Project NExTers. You can hardly get four or five of us together without a panel discussion on Professional Development, Promotion, and Tenure breaking out spontaneously. So I expect there will be a pretty good turnout. Project NExT-Wisconsin is open to all full-time faculty members in mathematics departments in the Wisconsin Section who have an earned doctorate and are within their first four years of post-doctoral undergraduate teaching. If this describes you, and you are interested in joining us, contact the director (that’s me) at collinbe@uwplatt.edu. Benjamin V.C. Collins, Director Project NExT-Wisconsin
