The Flim-Flam Man
(Funny Dice)
By Kathryn Nyman
Abstract:
We examine counter-intuitive loops among dice in which die A beats die
B, die B beats die C, and die C beats die A.
We find a relationship between complete digraphs and such intransitive
die loops. We
look at questions involving optimal win to loss ratios among dice, and
strategies involved in forming intransitive loops.
Predator Prey
Model
By Tom Schaer and Joel Schmidt
Abstract:
Using the Lotka-Volterra equations for predator-prey relationships, we
investigated the population change due to rate changes in the reproduction,
hunting, and predator consumption of the respective prey.
We found the equilibrium state of the populations and the maximum value
of each population when not in equilibrium.
Three
Approximation Methods
By Mark N. Short
Abstract: We
wish to compare and contrast three methods of approximating real functions.
In addition, we will present an interesting paradox that refutes a
commonly held notion in the scientific community that “more data is better.”
Modeling Bungee
Jumping
By Maxine Olson and Joel Bartlett
Abstract:
In the paper we use differential equations to model the experience of
a bungee jumper.
Nothing But the
Bottom of the Net
By Timothy May and Joseph Snyder
Abstract:
Through the application of differential equations, we discover the
effect of spin on a three point basketball shot.
