Pie a Professor

'Pie a Professor' event raises money for charity

Every student dreams of the day when he or she will be able to get back at his or her professor for the endless homework, pop quizzes and all-nighters. Few students imagine being able to do so while also contributing to charity!

On Friday, March 19, Carthage Math Club gave students that chance. The club sponsored their second annual "Pie a Professor" event during which students could pay $1 to pie a professor. All proceeds went to the St. Baldrick's Foundation for childhood cancer research, and this year Carthage Math Club raised $150.

"Math Club hosts Pie a Professor Day as a philanthropic way to celebrate Pi Day, March 14 (3.14), which was during Spring Break this year, so we picked the soonest day after that the professors were available," said Rachel Wolf, the club's president. "Even though we're one of the smaller groups on campus, Math Club likes to reach out to the Carthage community and beyond to make a positive impact. St. Baldrick's is a charity that is well-known around Carthage, and we wanted to support and promote this cause."

This is the first year that professors from disciplines other than mathematics were involved in the event. Eight professors bravely volunteered:

  • Prof. William Miller, sociology and criminal justice
  • Prof. Laura Huaracha, communications and digital media
  • Prof. Dr. Eduardo Garcia-Novelli, music
  • Prof. Dimitri Shapovalov, music
  • Prof. Corinne Ness, music
  • Prof. Erik Tou, mathematics
  • Prof. Al Klingenberg, mathematics
  • Prof. Aaron Trautwein, mathematics

The event was a hit with students and faculty alike.

"I've been waiting all week to do that," said one student after his turn.
